Datawind offers upgraded commercial versions of Aakash 2
Datawind has finally started sending out offers to buy commercial versions of recently launched Aakash 2 tablet to those who had pre-booked Aakash tablet.
Those who had ordered commercial version of Aakash or UbiSlate 7+ are now being given 3 upgraded offers to choose from UbiSlate 7CZ, UbiSlate 7c+ or UbiSlate 7Ci.
UbiSlate 7Ci is the commercial version of Aakash 2 tablet. It is being offered for Rs. 4499/- on their website. However, for those who have pre-booked earlier version, there is a discount offer of Rs. 500/-, so they would have to pay only Rs. 3,999/- for it.
The original MRP for commercial version of Aakash i.e. UbiSlate 7+ was Rs. 2,999/-.
Now, one has the option to instead buy UbiSlate 7CZ for Rs. 5,999/- with a discount of Rs. 500/-.
It means one has to pay Rs. 5,499/- for UbiSlate 7CZ, which seems to have the best features.
Similarly, the discounted price for Ubslate 7C+ comes to Rs. 4,499/-, while UbiSlate 7Ci (commercial version of Aakash 2) is being offered at a discounted price of Rs. 3,999/- to those who had pre-booked commercial version of Aakash.
Ubislate 7+, the commercial version of Aakash, that was booked by so many was supposed to have Android 2.2/2.3, while the upgraded options will have Android 4.0. Similarly, the upgraded versions will also have an improved processor Cortex A8-1Ghz, instead of Cortex A8-800 Mhz of Aakash 2.
Ubislate 7+ or Aakash 2 was to come with 256 MB, but the upgraded products would have double RAM of 512 MB, which is undoubtedly a huge advantage.
Similarly , all three upgraded versions have 4 GB flash memory, while Ubislate 7+ or Aakash 2 was supposed to have only 2GB flash memory.
The upgraded products also have multi-touch capacitive touch interface. Ubislate 7+ was supposedl to have Resistive touch interface. These versions would also have G-sensors, while Aakash 2 specifications did not have any sensors.
Aakash 2 was supposed to have Wi-fi and GPRS network features. The same stays in two improved versions. However, UbiSlate 7Ci would have only Wi-Fi but would have external 3G dongle support
There was no provision for a camera in Ubislate 7+ or the commercial version of Aakash 2 . These three improved versions of UbiSlate tablet would, however, have cameras. UbiSlate 7CZ would have dual camera, while the other two products would have front-facing camera.
Datawind has sent out offer letters to several customers who had pre-booked commercial version of Aakash 2 or Ubislate 7+. They are promising delivery of UbiSlate 7Ci within 1 to 2 weeks, of UbiSlate 7c+ within 2 to 4 weeks and of UbiSlate 7CZ within 4 to 6 weeks.
Lately, Datawind had come under increasing criticism for not making the promised delivery to the customers on time.
However, their upgrade offer is tempting as it comes with additional features. The difference in final prices is of Rs.1000/- for UbiSlate 7Ci, Rs. 1500/- for UbiSlate 7C+ and Rs. 2500 for UbiSlate 7CZ.
There is some dilemma for the customers, however. Recently, it has been reported that Aakash 3 tablet would soon be released and that this version may sport a SIM slot to make communication easy. It means that Aakash 3 may be used as a cellphone, while offering a possibility for 3G connectivity too.
It has been suggested that the global tender for Aakash-3 would be issued in February, 2013 and the delivery may begin by the end of the year.
The question for the customers is – should they wait for Aakash-3 or should they accept the Datawind offer to buy an upgraded version right now?
Well, I would go for one of the upgraded versions. Simply, because Aakash 3 is still in the planning stage. And you know, Indian timeline is always stretchable.
So, why wait for so long?
